Instagram will test hiding likes from posts

Instagram is considering hiding the like and video view counts from all posts (including photos, videos and permalinks). The test will begin this week for some users in Canada. If the change is well received, it will be rolled out to all users.

The like and view counts won’t be completely removed from the platform, they will just be hidden. This means that likes won’t be public anymore and will only be viewable to the owner of the account.

Instagram hopes this will stop its users comparing their likes to others, causing societal pressure, and instead focus on the content they are posting.

Social media platforms receive criticism that they do more harm than good, Facebook CEO (and owner of Instagram) Mark Zuckerberg said that their services should be more than just fun to use and should also be good for people’s wellbeing.

However, social influencers who are paid to post content on their profiles by companies as a form of advertising, are worried this could affect their income. Companies use the amount of likes an influencer has to measure their level of engagement.

How do you think this possible change will affect how you use Instagram?
