Google Instant is here and bringing you search results faster than ever. With Google Instant you only have to start typing your search query and Google will suggest related terms, all while automatically updating the search results as you type! Now that’s instant!
Well, it simply means that it’s more important than ever to be in the right position for the right keywords. Google Instant is deployed in such a way that it takes a large amount of screen real estate. This in turn pushes PPC ads further down the page, which means… yep, organic results are even lower!
For any one search query you may only see 1 or 2 organic search results before needing to scroll down the page! When you add universal search snippets into the search results too, it can be even worse for organic listings. See below:
With a wealth of options available to the searcher, how likely are they to scroll down? In this example the searcher has a whole load of targeted search results with only two being a generic organic result before scrolling.
While we’ve picked a fairly specific example search term here, this is a common type of search that users will be performing. So, how do you combat this? Well, simply put, you need to ensure the website optimisation you have in place is working! It will also be important to ensure your site is found well within the universal snippets, like Google Map results for location based searching.
Google Instant is still an early development and determining the full impact on SEO is a long way off. However, what is true now (and always has been) is ensuring your site is in the top positions for the right keywords.
